Practical Instructional Design provides a process for creating training that is based on decades of learning science and instructional design processes, but customized for application to any corporate or non-profit organization or industry. The foundational principle of this book is creating a process that documents every step of creating training, what I call creating a “training chain of evidence.” Based on courts and attorneys attacking training design and function in law enforcement, as well as attacking the instructors who write it using their “background, training, and experience,” this process applies case law that supports learning science to make it stand up to rigorous scrutiny. Essentially, it provides the “why” for everything you put into your training.
This is not a book on learning theories, tactics, or how people learn – there are plenty of books that already cover this. Instead, it provides a process, quality assurance methodology, and rigor that makes your training defensible with stakeholders and creates a QA process for your team – topics that are typically not covered when someone is promoted to instructor or instructional designer.
